The U.S.S. Constitution Sets Sail

Time News - - Mon, 20 Aug 2012 20:16:00 +0000

For only the second time in a century, the oldest commissioned vessel in the U.S. Navy — the 215-year-old U.S.S. Constitution — raised her sails in Boston harbor, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory over the British warship HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812.

The Real Thing? Original Coca-Cola Recipe Might Be on eBay

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 22:12:33 +0000

A Georgia antiques collector is the latest person to claim that he may have found the original recipe for Coca-Cola. Cliff Kluge and his wife Arlene recently bought a box of letters at an estate sale, and one of the yellowed papers, dated 1943, includes instructions for making cola, according to Atlanta’s WXIA via CNN Newsource. Kluge thinks it could potentially be the recipe for Coca-Cola and is trying to sell it on eBay; bidding starts at $5 million, but customers can buy it now for $15 million. (MORE: Bubbly Buzz: Coca-Cola Says Its Secret Recipe is Still a Secret) While most of the text has been whited out, Kluge says it seems to include instructions for making ”one gallon of concentrate, which, when combined and processed yields enough to make 16 gallons,” according to the eBay description of the letter: offered for sale is a single page, hand typed and written, 70+ year old recipe on yellowed paper that was purchased out of an estate of a local chemist in a city that claims the right of being where Coca Cola Bottling originated. Whoever typed this letter back in 1943, had access to the original recipe, and references that fact on the second page – ‘On page 83 of the Extractor is the original Coca Cola formula(e) which might serve as a source of preparation information.’ … you will be purchasing the entire recipe to include ingredients, ratios and preparation details. The Atlanta-based Coca-Cola has denied the claim, FOX News reports: “Through the years, many have tried to crack the secret formula, but no one has been able to reproduce the ‘real thing,’” the statement read. “The real formula is safely tucked away in a vault at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta.” Kluge is not the first to claim he has found the secret formula. In 2011, the producers of NPR’s This American Life found a recipe in a Feb, 18, 1979, issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and published it online – producing a wave of traffic that crashed the news outlet’s website. Coca-Cola debunked that report as well.

WATCH: Angelina Jolie and Brother’s Tribute to Their Mother

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 20:40:10 +0000

As a reminder that every day, really, should be Mother’s Day, here’s a video tribute, by actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, along with her brother, James Haven, of their mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died from ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. The 2010 video — released the day before the 3-year anniversary of Bertrand’s death and authenticated by celebrity site TMZ — features Bertrand, a single-mother with then 6-year-old Jolie in matching sundresses and leis, enjoying a vacation in Hawaii. It ends with, “We miss you mom. With love, Angelina and James.” Jolie, who has six kids of her own with actor Brad Pitt, describes Bertrand in a 2011 interview with 60 Minutes: “My mother was a full-time mother — she didn’t have much of her own career, her own life, her own experiences — everything was for her children. I will never be as good of a mom as she was. But I will try my best.” (MORE: Angelina Jolie’s Double Mastectomy: What We Know About BRCA Mutations and Breast Cancer) Jolie publicly revealed in a NY Times op-ed today that she took preventative measures to avoid suffering the same fate as her mother by undergoing a double mastectomy. “There is no longevity on my mother’s side of the family,” Jolie said in a 2007 Esquire interview. “My grandmother also died young, so my mother always thought it could happen to her. But she lived to see her grandchildren, lived to see both me and my brother in a nice place.” You can check out more videos of Bertrand’s interviews and film clips on her posthumous YouTube channel, maintained by Bill Day, Bertrand’s former partner. Larry Page Breaks Silence on His Vocal-Cord Paralysis

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 20:07:51 +0000

It’s been almost a year since Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt announced CEO Larry Page would be absent from a number of company events including last year’s annual meeting because he had lost his voice. On the heels of the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs in 2011, Page’s mysterious absence rattled Silicon Valley, stirring up speculation over whether Google was hiding an ailing CEO. But Page allayed concerns over his health Tuesday afternoon, when he took to Google+ to explain why he — and Google — remained silent for so long. As Businessweek reports, Page wrote about his struggle with a strained voice condition that began 14 years ago when a cold ultimately left him with paralysis in his left vocal cord. Doctors never identified a cause, but the condition left him with a fainter voice; nothing that could hinder him from running one of the world’s biggest companies. (MORE: Grading Google’s CEO Larry Page: A First Year Report Card) Last summer, Page was stricken with a similar cold that left the CEO hoarse and with limited movement in his second vocal cord, which is why he chose to sit out the company’s annual events. “Thankfully, after some initial recovery I’m fully able to do all I need to at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before,” he wrote. “And giving long monologues is more tedious for me and probably the audience.” According to Businessweek, the 39-year-0ld reportedly uses a microphone for even small staff meetings, but people close to him at Google said cancer has been ruled out. In his post, Page also revealed that in 2003 he was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, a mild chronic inflammatory condition of the thyroid, but doctors are uncertain whether it contributes to his vocal cord impairment, or if both are result of a virus. Page also announced plans to fund a research program at the Voice Health Institute led by Dr. Steven Zeitels, a laryngeal surgeon who also operated on singer Adele. But the CEO remains positive in his post on his rare

Thieves Rob Johannesburg Stadium after Bieber Concert

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 18:07:01 +0000

Thieves broke into a South African stadium early Monday, opened the safe and made off with a lot of loot — 3 million rand ($330,000) in cash. Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium was particularly well stocked with cash after both Justin Bieber and Jon Bon Jovi played shows there over the weekend, and police believe that’s why the crooks targeted it. “The intruders broke through the roof of the bathroom nearby and there is evidence that they gained entry by abseiling down to gain access to the strong room,” Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale, a spokesman for Gauteng police, told CNN. The crime was not discovered until Monday morning. A Soweto-based police officer, who declined to be named, told Reuters, “We don’t know how many people were involved as we are still gathering evidence.” Police are studying the stadium’s closed-circuit TV footage for clues to the crime. (MORE: New Study: Americans Dislike Justin Bieber, Would Vote Justin Timberlake For President) Trouble seems to have followed Bieber on his Believe tour. The 19-year old Canadian pop mega star had his pet monkey quarantined by German customs officials, caused an uproar in Amsterdam when he stopped by Anne Frank’s house, and was tackled by a fan while performing on stage in Dubai. Soccer City is the largest stadium in Africa with a seating capacity of almost 95,000. In addition to concerts, the stadium hosted the finals of the 2010 World Cup. Singing Woman Removed from Flight

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 17:00:02 +0000

While long suffering air travelers have frequently complained about being seated next to a crying baby on a long flight, there are worse things —like a woman who will not stop singing Whitney Houston’s classic “I Will Always Love You,” which in turn forces the airplane to make an unscheduled stop to remove her. According to The Daily Mail, the incident occurred on an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New York City on May 9. It’s unclear exactly when during the flight the passenger started to sing “I Will Always Love You,” the Dolly Parton song that Whitney Houston made famous, but she was unwilling to stop. The repetitive performance was so disruptive to the passengers and flight crew that the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at the Kansas City International Airport. According to a statement by airport spokesman Joe McBride, “There was a federal air marshal on the aircraft, who subdued the woman and put her in cuffs and removed her from the plane.” The video shows the Whitney Houston fan as she was removed from the flight, defiantly still singing the song. In Kansas City, the disruptive passenger was interviewed by authorities, but was released without charge. McBride said that the woman was forced to find her own way to her destination after the airline refused to fly her back to New York. Thus far the only explanation the woman has offered for her behavior is that she’s diabetic. MORE: Delta Kicks Classical Musician and His Cello Out of Frequent Flyer Program MORE: Flying Overseas? Ugly Fish Seeks Nubile Mate

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 16:02:27 +0000

The London Zoo is seeking a mate for an endangered tropical fish species – and time’s running out. Zoo officials believe that dams on the fish’s natural habitat, the now dried-up Mangarahara river in Madagascar, have made the Mangarahara cichlid extinct in the wild, reports the Associated Press. That means the only hopes for the critically-endangered species’ survival are the three fish that are known to exist in captivity – two at the London Zoo aquarium and one in Berlin. But there’s a problem: they’re all males, and they’re not getting any younger. Attempts to find any more female Mangarahara cichlids in zoos around the world have proved fruitless. The Berlin Zoo used to have a female in captivity, but attempts to get the two endangered fish to breed ended in disaster when the male killed his would-be mate – a common occurrence among cichlids, London Zoo’s aquarium curator, Brian Zimmerman, told the BBC. (MORE: Why a Hotter World Will Mean More Extinctions) The Zoological Society of London now wants to hear from any private aquarium owners, fish collectors and hobbyists if they have or know of any females in existence. They’ve even produced a “wanted” poster that they’ve asked people to distribute in the hope of finding someone that has one of the silver and orange fish, which Zimmerman told the BBC are instantly recognizable: “They are gorgeously ugly, they are unusual. They are more a connoisseur’s type of fish. They need quite a bit of space; the males are bigger than your hand, and they need a decent tank.” (MORE: 5 of the Most Endangered Species on the Planet) Given the advanced age of the London fish — at 12 years old, they’re reaching the end of their normal lifespan — the London aquarium’s curator isn’t holding out much hope of finding a mate for them in time. He also lamented the impact of human activities on freshwater fish. “As water becomes diverted for human use it becomes scarcer and fish generally lose out,” he told the BBC. “I think there’s probably a very

Catholic League Disses Bowie’s ‘Jesus’ Video

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 14:27:13 +0000

Davie Bowie’s explicit, star-studded video for the song “The Next Day” off his recent album of the same name has prompted the Catholic League to weigh in with a provocative post describing the veteran rocker as a “switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen from London.” (MORE: Behold: New York’s Glorious New Skyline, 4,259 Days in the Making) In the post, titled “Bowie’s ‘Jesus’ Video Is A Mess,” Catholic League commenter Bill Donohue lays into Bowie for the new video, in which Bowie plays, in Donohue’s words, “a Jesus-like character who hangs out in a nightclub dump frequented by priests, cardinals and half-naked women.” “David Bowie is back, but hopefully not for long,” quips Donohue, describing the video as “strewn with characteristic excess”: …one priest bashes a homeless man, while others are busy hitting on women; self-flagellation is depicted; a dancing gal with bleeding hands makes a stigmata statement; and a customer is served eyeballs on a plate. The lyrics refer to the “priest stiff in hate” and “women dressed as men for the pleasure of that priest.” The song concludes with, “They can work with Satan while they dress with the saints.” In short, the video reflects the artist—it is a mess. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, a sort of Roman Catholic lobbyist group that claims it “defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination,” was founded in 1973 as a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization; Donohue has served as president for two decades. In a 1999 New York Times article, the paper referred to Donohue as conducting “scathing attacks on the blasphemous and the irreverent in movies, magazines and art exhibitions,” suggesting that he “fans … simmering anger with inflammatory news releases” and that he criticizes “everything from Miramax movies to tasteless jokes about nuns.” (TIME’s own Tim Padgett, also Catholic, describes Donohue as “dyspeptic.”) That might explain why Donohue is targeting Bowie here: Calling the singer “confused about religion,” Donohue goes on to mock Bowie’s comments on atheism (“I’m

Singapore’s Toilet-Rating App Flushes Out Filthy Facilities

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 11:45:23 +0000

If cleanliness is truly next to godliness then Singaporeans must be the holiest people on the planet. Tech-obsessed residents now have a mobile app that tracks the condition of the city-state’s public toilets. The Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) launched the smartphone tool last week, and it is already proving popular with hygiene-conscious sorts who recoil at the prospect of stepping into a lavatory of dubious repute. (MORE: Kansas Woman Discovers Circus Tiger in Bathroom) “This app provides toilet users with the convenience of locating a clean toilet nearby and also providing feedback on a dirty toilet they have just visited,” Emerson Hee, the scheme’s executive director, said in a statement, according to Reuters. The LOO (Let’s Observe Ourselves) Connect app was developed by the Singapore Land Authority and Nanyang Polytechnic and was initially launched for Android-based devices with an Apple version due by July. The free software has already has been downloaded more than 500 times via Google Play and relies on users to rank Singapore’s 40,000 public toilets. “At least this app lets me know which toilet to avoid, no need walk into the toilet just to find that it is dirty!” wrote one satisfied reviewer. (WATCH: Matt Damon Is On Strike Against The Toilet) Users can upload photos to name and shame substandard commodes or even single out favorite restrooms for special merit. Only those facilities that receive four stars or more will be deemed user-friendly. RAS has been campaigning for better toilets in Singapore since 1998. Apart from the LOO Connect App, the non-profit group also asks for donations for restroom cleaning attendants, runs a competition for clean toilet heroes and produces posters on topics such as “how to have fun in the toilet.” Singapore is well deserving of its squeaky-clean reputation and boasts stiff penalties for littering such as an $800 fine plus community service. Since 2004, it has also banned the consumption of chewing gum without a medical certificate. $127,000 Bed on a Plane for Israeli Leader

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 09:45:17 +0000

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing a new round of public uproar at home. Last year, his foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman resigned after corruption charges. Now, Israel’s Channel 10 TV reported over the weekend that Netanyahu himself spent $127,000 in public funds on a custom-built sleeping chamber for a five-hour flight from Tel Aviv to London to attend Margaret Thatcher’s funeral last month, according to the Associated Press. News of the splurge couldn’t come at a worse time for the leader. Netanyahu’s coalition government is drawing up new tax increases as part of his austerity plan that up to 15,000 people protested against on Saturday night, according to the Guardian. The austerity measure was proposed by Finance Minister Yair Lapid, a former TV news anchor who campaigned as the champion of Israel’s middle class. On Saturday, the crowd, chanting “no future with Bibi and Lapid,” marched through Tel Aviv, noted the Telegraph. (More: Key Netanyahu Ally’s Corruption Trial Marks Pivotal Moment in Israeli Politics) Netanyahu’s offices initially defended the installment of the custom-built double bed for the prime minister and his wife Sara, a former flight attendant who is now a psychologist. According to Reuters, it said the prime minister was “entitled” to a good rest after a busy day. But the office quickly changed its stance after the outpouring of public criticism. It now says Netanyahu, unaware of the cost back then, has canceled such beds on all future flights. Sima Kadmon, a political commentator at Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth, writes that it is “unbelievable” no one in his office saw how ridiculous such a plan was. Kadmon pointed out that Israeli President Shimon Peres, who will turn 90 in June, spent 11 hours on a flight to South Korea without any special requests. “We thought nothing could surprise us when it came to the Netanyahus’ personal conduct,” Kadmon wrote. “Well, we were wrong. It turns out that King Bibi and Queen Sara can do as they please.” This is not the first time Netanyahu’s budget has come under fire. In

Prince Harry Holding Things

Time News - - Tue, 14 May 2013 07:00:59 +0000

Since Prince Harry landed in the U.S. on May 9, he has devoted the trip to doing good deeds — attending a Mother’s Day tea for military moms with First Lady Michelle Obama, cheering up the injured at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and playing a rousing game of sitting volleyball with wounded veterans during the Warrior Games, a paralympic sporting competition in Colorado Springs (see above). He even squeezed in time to sing “Happy Birthday” to Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin on May 10. And today, he is at the Jersey Shore, touring the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy. While the media has joked that the Prince is on his best behavior after TMZ published embarrassing photos of the rowdy royal playing naked billiards in a Las Vegas hotel room during his last trip to the States, the Prince has been doing charity work around the world since he was a teen. Inspired by the above photo of Prince Harry holding a volleyball during the Warrior Games on May 11, NewsFeed decided to look back at the third heir to the British throne‘s past official trips — mostly philanthropic — through pictures of him holding things, from a puppy to support an organization that gives dogs to disabled people, to a python to promote wildlife conservation efforts. No, you won’t find images of the naked royal holding his “crown jewels” in this particular round-up — but if you’d like a refresher, click here. Pedro and Onil Castro Denounce ‘Monster’ Brother Ariel in CNN Interview

Time News - - Mon, 13 May 2013 18:40:16 +0000

In an exclusive interview with CNN, Onil Castro and Pedro Castro — brothers of Ariel Castro, who allegedly held three women captive in his Cleveland home for nearly a decade — said Ariel is completely dead to them. Police took the brothers into custody on May 6, the night the women fled the house, and released them Thursday after they found no evidence that the two had anything to do with the abductions of Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight, and Gina DeJesus. Now their brother Ariel, a 52-year-old school bus driver, has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. Bail has been set at $8 million, and paternity tests show he is the father of Amanda Berry’s six-year-old daughter, who was also found the night the women escaped. (MORE: The Prison Next Door) Onil Castro described Ariel to CNN’s Martin Savidge as a ”monster. I hope he rots in that jail…I want him to suffer.” “He’s a goner,” added Pedro, who was particularly horrified that Ariel helped the family of Gina DeJesus, one of the abducted women, in the search for their missing daughter, even though he had been holding her captive in his home the entire time. Onil and Pedro told CNN that they only learned the details about the kidnapping from the detectives who interrogated them in jail last week. If they had any inkling that Ariel carried out the kidnapping, “I would have grabbed him by my neck myself,” Onil said. The allegations have ”torn my heart apart,” he said. “This has killed me.  I am a walking corpse right now.” Pedro told CNN he never noticed anything suspicious at Ariel’s house because he had always been “a strange dude.” For instance, Ariel claimed he kept the windows covered to save energy, and he kept the TV and radio blaring all day long. Occasionally, he would cook food for his brothers, but they would always have to eat outside on the steps of the house. In the last 10 years, the brothers said they were never allowed past the kitchen. MORE: The
